Mainspring

By Frederik Drost

A mainspring is a coiled piece of metal found in a watch movement that provides the energy to power its timekeeping functions. It is wound up manually or by an automatic winding system, and then gradually unwinds, releasing energy through a gear train that powers the watch hands. The mainspring is a vital component of the movement and must be replaced periodically to ensure the watch continues to keep accurate time.
